Recently, this historical&nbsp;tournament has&nbsp;been fetishised even more&nbsp;with the Euro 2020 playing out partly on English soil. And, as was the case 25 years ago, a familiar foe awaits in the knockout phase \u2013 however, this time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betfair.com\/sport\/football\/uefa-euro-2020\/england-v-germany\/30642793\">England v Germany betting<\/a> odds suggest it\u2019s the hosts that may just prevail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Classic Squads<br><br>England \/\/ Euro 96<br><br>&#x1f3f4;&#xe0067;&#xe0062;&#xe0065;&#xe006e;&#xe0067;&#xe007f; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CEuoL26mtp\">pic.twitter.com\/CEuoL26mtp<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Classic Football Shirts (@classicshirts) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/classicshirts\/status\/1405918609113817093?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 18, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Euro \u201896 was played out with a backdrop of a beautiful English summer, and given that the national team was blessed with a set of excellent players \u2013 and the ghosts of Graham Taylor\u2019s managerial reign, in which England failed to even qualify for the World Cup of 1994 \u2013 there were hopes that this version of the Three Lions could achieve something remarkable on home soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany and Italy had been installed as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/sports-betting-bookmakers-going-strong-on-the-dutch-1526322.html\">joint-favourites to lift the trophy<\/a>, with England&nbsp;given a decent chance by the bookmakers to go deep into the event. They did exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English set-up prominently featured four figures with significant Spurs ties. In the managerial hot-seat was Terry Venables, who led Tottenham to glory in the 1991 FA Cup. He fashioned a team in his own mould, who played brave and \u2013 whisper it \u2013 cosmopolitan football, which was a rarity indeed for an England side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his squad, he named Teddy Sheringham, who made more than 250 appearances for Spurs, Darren Anderton, who won the League Cup with the club in 1999, and who pulled on the lily-white shirt a frustratingly non-rounded 299 appearances.&nbsp;And then there was Paul Gascoigne \u2013 Gazza \u2013 the epitome and totem of the English public\u2019s restored love of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unofficial English anthem for the tournament \u2013 \u2018Three Lions\u2019 by the comedians Baddiel &amp; Skinner \u2013 featured a line in which they prayed that England could finally end \u201830 years of hurt\u2019. But would life imitate art?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Summer of Love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be long before England fans fell in love with football again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, it took just 23 minutes for Alan Shearer to fire the Three Lions ahead in the tournament opener against Switzerland. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all summer romances, there were obstacles to overcome and when the Swiss equalised, it was back to the drawing board for Venables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he would be able to call upon the mercurial talents of his talisman, Gascoigne, in the next game against Scotland. His goal against their bitter rivals \u2013 lifting the ball over Colin Hendry\u2019s head before volleying it home expertly \u2013 remains one of the best ever scored in an English shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That left a winner-takes-all clash with the Netherlands in the final Group A encounter. The Dutch had been priced as&nbsp;favourites to win the group,&nbsp;but you wouldn\u2019t have known that on the evening of June 18, 1996 \u2013 Sheringham bagging a brace in a 4-1 demolition that had home fans in raptures, the strains of \u2018it\u2019s coming home\u2019 ringing out across the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OnThisDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OnThisDay<\/a> 2&#xfe0f;&#x20e3;5&#xfe0f;&#x20e3; years ago: a memorable shootout win over Spain at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wembleystadium?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@wembleystadium<\/a> during EURO 96! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DX6Og4mh73\">pic.twitter.com\/DX6Og4mh73<\/a><\/p>&mdash; England (@England) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/England\/status\/1407388166911315975?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 22, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Penalty shootouts have not been kind to England in the past, but even that mountain was navigated in the quarter-final victory over Spain \u2013 with no other than&nbsp;Gazza notching the winning spot-kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so it was the old enemy, Germany, who awaited in the semi-final. They had dumped England out of the World Cup in the most heartbreaking fashion in 1990, and revenge would be a dish best served cold under the London sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/live\/2020\/mar\/24\/england-v-germany-euro-96-semi-final-live\">that was the plan<\/a>, anyway. The reality was that a 1-1 draw once again saw the two sides lock horns on penalties, and once again it was Germany who prevailed despite Sheringham and Gascoigne slotting their kicks home. They went on to lift the trophy, defeating the outsiders Czech Republic in the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, that was that.
