Much has been made of the viewpoint, that Tottenham are now a team labelled ‘a work in progress’ and with Jose Mourinho looking to carry out a rather painful rebuilding job, supporters will be hoping for an influx of new faces this summer.

However, the transfer market is a highly different beast since Mourinho took over last November and with the COVID-19 crisis meaning that finances are looking rather flat, some creative accounting may have to be carried out by the Tottenham board.

With that said, it is no secret that ENIC are known for sometimes going for a cheaper option and the fact that the market has been supressed, will perhaps be music to the ears of their often maligned chairman Daniel Levy.

The upcoming transfer window which opens in less than two weeks, is going to be a pivotal moment in Mourinho’s Tottenham tenure and failure to make improvements to the squad during this time, could prove to be his ultimate doing.

A look at the current makeup of Tottenham’s squad suggests something of an imbalance and it is fair to say, that several departments have been neglected and fans would argue, that as many as six reinforcements may be required.

Whether Tottenham or any club for that matter have the ability to make a half-dozen cash outlays, is something that remains to be seen and therefore, buying versatility may prove to be the way forward.

Which is why the capture of Declan Rice is one that seems even more appealing and with the England international able to play in both central defence and midfield, his arrival would represent an almost two for one capture.

The 21-year-old is currently helping West Ham keep their heads just above the choppy waters of relegation and if the East Londoners were to suffer the despair that comes with the drop, the target of Rice soon becomes locked on.

Critics will say, why would Spurs need the delivery of Rice, in addition to their own ‘Mr Versatility’ in Eric Dier and that is a valid point. However, when you consider the departure of Jan Vertonghen later this month, it is a void that will soon have to be filled.

A void that Rice could fil rather easily and with Dier’s own performances further down the field garnering increased plaudits, there is no reason why the two England stars cannot form a new centre back partnership.

While even if Rice were deployed further forward, he could also offer the perfect defensive screen in midfield and with this becoming a real problem area for the North Londoners, the solution may lie just across the capital.

Of course, even if West Ham do survive the threat of relegation, that does not mean that Rice cannot be snared and even though Spurs are in an obvious state of transition, they still find themselves higher up the Premier League hierarchy.

With that said, the former Chelsea youth player will not come cheap and regardless of West Ham’s divisional status, manager David Moyes will be loathed to lose him. However, should Tottenham fork out £40m or so, it could prove to be a rather shrewd bit of business.
