The first London derby since the Premier League returned is in the books, and Jose Mourinho would have been pleased with his side’s effort in the victory over West Ham United. Spurs were made to wait for the breakthrough, with their opening goal coming midway through the second half.

There was more than a shade of contention about the goal, as Tomas Soucek put the ball into his own goal beyond a helpless Lukasz Fabianski. Soucek’s own goal ensured that he was the fourth Czech to score an own goal in the Premier League. However, video replays showed that the ball might have brushed the arm of Davinson Sanchez on its way into the box. David Moyes was fuming at the full-time whistle with the part that VAR played, despite the Hammers being saved by the technology in the first half.

Heung Min-Son had thought that he had given Spurs the lead on the stroke of half time after he fired past Fabianski into the bottom left-hand corner. However, the goal was disallowed after replays showed that the South Korean’s toe was in an offside position. The game was once again played behind closed doors, but once the season restarts fans will be looking for Tottenham Hotspur tickets to attend games.

Once Spurs went ahead there looked like there was very little room back into the match for West Ham. They did have one glimmer of hope in the second period as Jarrod Bowen smashed the most, but the toothless Hammers offered very little in the way of an attacking threat throughout the match and seemingly looked happy with a point from the first minute.

Spurs were able to add a second late in the match as Harry Kane raced clear to score his 18th goal of the season. Kane’s composed finish after running clear of the Hammers backline was also his eighth in 12 games under Mourinho and his first of 2020. Kane is only behind Sergio Aguero in the list of top scorers that have played more than 200 games for one club, while only Teddy Sheringham, Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard have scored more goals in London derbies than the Spurs striker.

This was Tottenham’s first double over West Ham since the 2012-13 season and was their first win at their stunning home stadium since the first weekend in February. However, they will be still relying on teams above them to drop points if they are to make it into the top-four this season, with Spurs sitting six points behind Chelsea. Tottenham are just one point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United, but all three sides above them now have a game in hand.

However, Spurs will be hoping that their return to winning ways at home will set them up for their remaining games at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as they have huge fixtures coming up against Everton, Arsenal and Leicester City.

Victories in those games could leave them in a very strong position for a finish in the top-four should the opportunity present itself. Meanwhile, Tottenham will come up against Sheffield United in their next fixture.

The first London derby since the Premier League returned is in the books, and Jose Mourinho would have been pleased with his side’s effort in […]

[7
75,185,188,163,301
post-1669","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tottenham-hotspur","tag-harry-kane","tag-premier-league","tag-spurs","tag-tottenham-hotspur","tag-west-ham-united

Spurs Look More Relaxed After Opener
