After reaching the Champions League final last season, the general feeling amongst Daniel Levy, Pochettino and co must be for more of the same and to go one step further than just losing finalists.

It is time to end the trophy
hoodoo which has stretched back to 2008 and with yet another appearance in
Europe’s premier competition provides another opportunity to get over the line.

However, in order to do so,
first they must progress from a group involving Bayern Munich, Olympiacos and
Red Star Belgrade.

So, how do the Lilywhites
match up against their soon to be opponents?

Four times Spurs and German
giants Bayern Munich have met, and it is advantage Germany in the head to
heads.

The pair first met in the
1982 Cup Winners Cup at White Hart Lane, the first leg finished 1-1 with Steve
Archibald netting for the Lilywhites.

However, the second leg in
Munich saw the German’s run riot with a 4-1 victory in which Chris Hughton
scored the consolation for Spurs.

The pair were drawn with one
another a year later in the UEFA Cup 3rd round with Bayern recording
a 1-0 home win before Tottenham gained revenge with a 2-0 win on home soil.

In total, Tottenham has won
once, with one draw and two defeats against Bayern Munich.

You have to take yourself
back to 1972 for the last time these two met.

It was the second round of
the UEFA Cup and Tottenham hosted Greek heavyweights Olympiacos in the first
leg and duly went on to win 4-0.

A Jimmy Pearce brace
coupled with a Martin Chivers and Ralph Coates goal each sealed the tie.

In the second leg,
Olympiacos won 1-0 but by then the damage had already been done.

Ironically, after defeating
Olympiacos in the second round of the 1972/73 UEFA Cup, Spurs were drawn against
Red Star Belgrade in the third round for the sides only meetings.

Martin Chivers was once
again on the scoresheet as was Alan Gilzean as Spurs took a 2-0 lead to Serbia.

Similar to Olympiacos, Red
Star took a 1-0 win with Tottenham’s first leg lead enough to see them through.

After reaching the Champions League final last season, the general feeling amongst Daniel Levy, Pochettino and co must be for more of the same and […]

[179
272,186,275,274
post-1444","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-bayern-munich","tag-champions-league","tag-olympiacos","tag-red-star-belgrade

Bayern Munich
