Following Tottenham’s morale-boosting victory over Real Madrid, it was time to prepare for the chance to win a piece of high(ish) profile pre-season silverware in the Audi Cup.
As soon as Harry Kane latched onto a poor attempt to keep the ball in play from Marcelo mid-way through the first half, it looked inevitable Tottenham would be able to hold on to face Bayern in the Audi Cup final.
And so it proved be with a final against Bayern lined up in the German giants own backyard own back yard – The Allianz.
However, that did nothing to deter Mauricio Pochettino’s men as the Bayern home crowd failed to intimidate Spurs as Tottenham claimed their first piece of silverware this new season (and hopefully not the last).
They were made to work for it though despite going 2-0 up.
Erik Lamela arrived at the back post to slide the ball home in the ninth minute to give Tottenham the perfect start.
That is how it stayed until after the break when Christian Eriksen fired home to make it 2-0 to the Premier League outfit.
It looked like Spurs would cruise to victory until just two minutes later Jann-Fiete Arp pulled one back for the Germans and in the 81st minute Canadian midfielder Alphonso Davies levelled the scored to send the final to penalties.
Defeat seemed inevitable at this point for Tottenham, after all, an England v Germany penalty shootout rarely ends in the favour of the team dressed all in white.
However, Bayern got off to the worst possible start missing their opening penalty and a Paulo Gazzaniga save ensured Tottenham head home with a prestigious pre-season trophy in the bag.
The match was a little bittersweet though as record signing Tanguy Ndombele scored from the spot, but defender Juan Foyth was pulled off the pitch on a stretcher.
As the Lilywhites prepare to kick the new season off against Aston Villa, there is just one pre-season test left against Inter Milan.
However, if the Audi Cup and Champions League last season has proven, Tottenham really can mix it with the big boys.
Now its time to win some proper silverware.
